  • Comment from the January 2006 conference: A Nonlinear Dynamics Approach to Sensory Modulation - "Excellent conference! Your depth of knowledge and passion is inspirational. I left there with new ideas and motivation to develop a new and improved sensory focus on our unit. I even signed up for an online introduction course to aromatherapy - I got my first lesson today! (I love my lavender scented beanbag.) I’m looking forward to working with you more." - Diane Trikakis, OTR/L

  • Comment from the January 2006 conference: A Nonlinear Dynamics Approach to Sensory Modulation - "Tina Champagne was wonderful! Her ability to answer questions so that all the professionals in the room would benefit (OTR, COTA, RN, support staff) was unmatched. To be able to present as much information as well as she did in such a short time is unmatched!" - Meghan Franklin, MS, OTR/L

Tina received her BS and M.Ed. degrees from Springfield College in Springfield, MA. She is an independent consultant and the occupational therapy and counselor staff supervisor for acute psychiatric services at Cooley-Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, MA. She enjoys creating and implementing innovative programs using a variety of service delivery models. Her most recent initiatives include the creation of nurturing and healing treatment systems of care, the application of nonlinear dynamic systems theory to clinical practice and organizational change, and establishing a foundation of research in these areas. Tina is currently an adjunct professor for the American International College occupational therapy program and guest lectures for occupational therapy and rehabilitation programs. She developed and maintains the OT Innovations for Psychosocial Practice networking website and is the owner and chief consultant of Champagne Conferences & Consultation.

Tina has consulted with and presented for numerous mental health organizations and OT associations across the country on state, national, and international levels. She is on the faculty of the National Technical Assistance Center for State Mental Health Planning for the National Executive Technical Institute: Creating Violence Free and Coercion Free Mental Health Treatment Environments for the Reduction of Seclusion and Restraint and has provided resources that have been integrated into the course's teaching and resource manuals.

Awards
Tina received the 2008 MA State Commissioner's Distinguished Service Award and a State Senate Citation for her innovative work in restraint and seclusion reduction, integrating sensory modulation and trauma informed care approaches in mental health care settings across state and national levels. In 2006, she received the Catherine Anne Trombly Award from the MA Occupational Therapy Association for innovation in the areas of practice, education, and research in mental health. She has also received the 2005 Irene Allard Outstanding Fieldwork Educator Award from the New England Occupational Therapy Education Council.

Project Collaboration
Tina works with the MA State Department of Mental Health and the National Association of State Mental Health Program Director's (NASMHPD) Technical Assistance Center on a variety of projects. These include some of the following:
  • In 2003, she was asked by Kevin Huckshorn of NASMHPD to become a part of the faculty and to assist in developing training materials for the Seclusion and Restraint Tools portion of the National Executive Training Institute: Creating Violence Free and Coercion Free Treatment Environments; a training curriculum created and implemented due to the national (federal) initiative to decrease the use of seclusion and restraint
  • In 2004, she published a continuing education article on the use of sensory approaches in mental health with Nan Stromberg at the request of Kevin Huckshorn of NASMHPD/NTAC in the Journal of Psychosocial nursing
  • In 2004, she assisted with the development and editing of sensory-related questionnaires used to survey DMH child and adult programs across the state of MA regarding progress on the implementation of sensory approaches
  • In 2005, she co-hosted a free training with the MA State DMH on Sensory Approaches for Western MA providers at Cooley Dickinson Hospital
  • In 2006, she was asked to co-present a full-day presentation on the use of sensory modulation in mental health for all MA State DMH OT's, which was fully hosted by DMH as part of the restraint reduction grant project through SAMSHA
  • In May 2006, she was asked to assist in revising the National Executive Institute Training's module on Seclusion and Restraint Reduction Tools & to co-present this information at a conference in Boston for the MA State DMH Child Programs
  • In June 2006, Tina was part of a DMH funded training video on the topics of trauma-informed care, sensory modulation and restraint reduction, which will be used as a training video by DMH for the purposes of the restraint reduction initiative
  • She created and assisted the MA State Dept of Mental Health in editing four sections of the Developing Positive Cultures of Care Resource Guide, published in the Spring of 2007.
  • She provides trainings and consultation to many DMH licensed organizations across the state of MA and is highly recommended as a consultant and inter-disciplinary staff trainer by the National Technical Assistance Center.
  • She is in the process of multiple research projects, due to the need to create a foundation of evidence for the use of the Sensory Modulation Program (a guideline for the implementation of sensory-related approaches, modalities, programming and environmental enhancements), to facilitate a more individualized, collaborative and humane treatment approach in mental health.
Research & Grant Projects: In Progress
2005-2008: 4 Weighted Blanket Studies Completed; one has been published (Mullen et al., 2008), 1 has been submitted for publication and 2 are being prepared to submit for publication consideration Summer 2008.

2008, Vermont State: Received a SAMHSA grant with the Vermont State DMH, Vermont State Hospital & Brattleboro Retreat to complete a 3-year project using the NETI guidelines and sensory modulation as a primary approach to decrease the need for the use of restraint & seclusion (included the creation of 2 OTR positions). Champagne is the lead OT consultant on this project.

2007-2008, NYC Health & Hospital Corporation: in November 2007 Champagne was contracted to conduct a large-scale educational project by the NYC HHC to offer a series of 4 sensory modulation trainings, open to all acute care sites in NYC. In 2008, Champagne, Ai-Lian Lim from Bellevue Hospital, Suzanne White, Diane Tewfik, Mary Donovan, NYSOTA, NYC HHC and several NYC OTs began a collaborative initiative to begin exploring ways to bring OT back into acute care MH practice settings across NYC in support of the sensory modulation movements. On 5/31-6/1, 2008 a 2-day conference on Sensory Modulation was a kick off to the next phase of this project. The presenters included Champagne, Lindsey Beil & Linda Messbauer. Champagne will be a primary consultant for the Bellevue hospital initiative to establish OT and the sensory modulation program in mental health.
